Two Portuguese men detained in Indonesia last year for drug trafficking have been sentenced to 20 and 13-and-a-half years respectively. The longer sentence was handed to surfer from Fernando Santos, 37, who always denied the charges, while the lighter term went to economy student from Madeira, Rui Viana, 20, the son of a well-known former footballer Rui Óscar. Viana’s lawyer has expressed relief that his client did not receive life imprisonment, or the death penalty, and says his next step will try and get Viana extradited to Portugal to serve the remainder of his sentence.
