January was the 2nd rainiest January in Portugal since the turn of the century – but it still didn’t totally fix the ‘drought’ problems in the Alentejo and Barlavento Algarve.
Those two regions still remained ‘affected by drought’, albeit they too saw some rain, with rivers and streams running healthily even if only for a period of a few days at a time.
The wider picture however has seen almost 94% of the country ‘out of drought’, with many dams and reservoirs looking excellent. As for the intensity of the rain, reports show that many meteorological stations measured monthly rainfall for January two to three greater than habitual averages.
