Jazz musician McCoy Tyner to delight audience

One of the most prestigious jazz pianists and composers of the present time, McCoy Tyner will perform at Monumento Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco in Loulé tomorrow (Saturday) from 10pm.

With a musical style influenced by Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner blends technique with lyricism and harmonic innovations to perfection.

He enjoys the status of a living legend especially thanks to his collaboration as a pianist in the band of saxophonist John Coltrane, where he started at the age of just 17.

McCoy Tyner is also considered to be one of the most influential jazz pianists of the 20th century, an honour he earned both with Coltrane and in his years of performing following Coltrane’s passing.

His unique right-hand soloing is recognisable for a detached, or staccato, quality. His melodic vocabulary is rich, ranging from raw blues to complexly superimposed pentatonic scales. His unique approach to chord voicing (most characteristically by fourths) has influenced a wide array of contemporary jazz pianists, most notably Chick Corea. He will be playing with his trio and there will be a special guest appearance by Joe Lovano on saxophone.
