With the sector facing all kinds of problems, boiling down to lack of money, the weekend’s Congress of Journalists unanimously approved a general strike, to be held at ‘some time in the future; not during the elections’. “On the day for voting on motions and conclusions, a proposal to create a public support fund for the profession through the increase of IVA on wine was rejected”, writes Correio da Manhã. It is not clear whether this proposal referred to wine sold at the Congress, or in a wider sphere. As for the strike, the date is to be settled by the Syndicate of Journalists. The last ‘general strike’ by the profession was in 1982.
