João Djaló, brother of Porto footballer Tiago, finally back behind bars
A judicial slip up left ‘career criminal’ João Djaló, free to pursue his terrified victim, to the extent that she “even contemplated suicide”.
Tabloid Correio da Manhã carries the terrifying story today, stressing that the brother of Porto footballer Tiago Djaló has been in and out of the prison system for the last 20 years.
Now 37, he was arrested twice, in a short space of time, following complaints alleging rape by the same victim – a woman described as being so desperate after she realised her complaints were not getting anywhere that she contemplated killing herself.
The first time, when the young victim simply presented a complaint to PSP police, she was told it was a matter of her word against his; there was nothing they could do.
The second time, Djaló was arrested, taken before a judge in Lisbon, who released him on the understanding that an electronic bracelet would be fitted, to ensure he did not approach the woman again.
The problem was that the bracelet was never fitted.
According to CM, Djaló continued harassing his victim – threatening her safety and that of her seven-year-old child – until finally he was arrested for a second time, and is now being held in preventive custody.
With the criminal record that he has, it is very possible João Djaló could be looking at a further stretch behind bars. In the meantime, PJ police have “admitted”, says CM, that there may be other victims of his presumed modus operandi (which is to ‘meet’ women over social media and then become violent with them once they have agreed to meet him face-to-face).
The paper stresses that anyone who may have been a victim “can present complaints up to six months since the crime was committed”.
CM adds that Djaló returned to Lisbon prison “showing no contrition”. He reportedly already knows many of the guards, and some of the inmates.
The paper stresses that the brother of a nationally-famous footballer “uses religion in the wrong way – he is Muslim – to explain his aggressive behaviour towards women”.
