A Portuguese family of emigrés to Venezuela got the worst possible news after paying out a purported €1 million to secure the release of a kidnaped family member. The bodies of Móises Gomes and his bodyguard were found on the hard shoulder of a motorway on Tuesday. Both bodies showed signs of torture. Say reports, police have identified the killers but have yet to find them.
Gomes went missing last Tuesday. He and his father ran a well-known supermarket in Vargas, north of Caracas.
The 36-year-old father of two’s family received a ransom demand last Wednesday, and by Friday had paid it.
“They were waiting for Móises’ return home, with his bodyguard when they received the news that he had been found dead”, writes Correio da Manhã.
At least two other Portuguese emigrés have been found dead this year as Venezuela is plunged further and further into social and economic crisis.
Thousands of families have already returned ‘home’, principally to the island of Madeira which has been struggling to cope with the sudden influx (click here).
