Algarve Crochet & Knitting Group donates over 540 handmade items to those in need
The power of community and creativity has come together to spread warmth and hope this winter. The Algarve Crochet & Knitting Group, supported by volunteers and the Friends Crafting in the Algarve, has successfully completed and distributed over 500 handmade items to charities supporting vulnerable individuals and families.
The project, which aimed to produce 500 hats, exceeded expectations with a total of 541 hats created. But the generosity didn’t stop there. The group also donated lap blankets, shawls, scarves, gloves, socks, and even cat baskets to a range of organisations providing care and support throughout the region.

Benefiting organisations
The handmade items were distributed to several local charities, including:
- CASA Albufeira (Centro de Apoio aos Sem-Abrigo): Supporting homeless individuals and families at risk of social exclusion.
- Castelo de Sonhos: Helping low-income families and seniors in Silves.
- Portimão Soup Kitchen: Providing meals and essential care to those in need in the Portimão area.
- M.A.P.S. (Movimento de Apoio à Problemática da Sida): An organisation focused on community services for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, substance abuse, migration, and social discrimination.
- Algarve Families in Need: Offering aid to struggling families across the region.
- AGA Cat Charity: Caring for stray and abandoned cats in the community.
- Associação Somos Esperança: Providing food, clothing, furniture, medications, diapers, orthopaedic equipment, and washing facilities for homeless and vulnerable individuals.
- Vicentina – Associação para o Desenvolvimento do Sudoeste: Supporting social and economic development initiatives in the southwest Algarve.
In addition, residents at the Old People’s Home in Armação de Pêra received cosy lap blankets and scarves, bringing warmth and joy to the elderly during the chilly months.
