Lagoa celebrates International Ecology Day with moth and bird observation workshops

Held in Estômbar, the activities highlight the vital relationship between ecology and society in the pursuit of sustainable human development.

The Municipality of Lagoa is joining forces with SPECO (Portuguese Society of Ecology) and A Rocha (Christian Association for the Defense of the Environment) to promote International Ecology Day: “an international initiative that aims to establish, uniquely, the link between ecology and society, towards building more sustainable human development”, says the Municipality.

To mark the date, the Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes in Estômbar is hosting free workshops on September 13 and 14.

On the 13th, between 21h00 and 23h00, the Moths and Nocturnal Butterflies  Workshop will take participants on a journey through the nocturnal world of moths. Registration is mandatory.

And on the 14th, the Bird Watching Walk will take place from 09h00 to 12h00. With this initiative, the Municipality of Lagoa aims to raise awareness of the importance and beauty of migratory birds, the dangers they face during their movements, and the need to preserve the places where they rest, feed, and reproduce during migrations. Registration is also required.

The Municipality of Lagoa points out that “ecology is the branch of biology that studies the interactions between organisms and their environment, both biotic (other living beings) and abiotic (non-living factors such as climate, soil and water).”

“It is the science that investigates how these interactions affect the distribution and abundance of organisms, population dynamics, the structure of ecological communities, the flow of energy and the cycle of nutrients in ecosystems” says the events’ website.
