Lagoa hosts “The Planets” by Gustav Holst

The Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium on February 23.

The Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra is returning to Lagoa’s Carlos do Carmo Auditorium this month. The reputed ensemble is coming to the Algarve to perform Gustav Holst’s symphonic suite, The Planets, on February 23 at 16h00.

Synopsis: Composed between 1914 and 1916, “The Planets” is a symphonic suite with seven movements, written for a large orchestra and with a female choir in the last movement. Holst’s starting point for this music was the astrological character of each planet. His daughter said that once he had formulated the underlying idea, he “let the music get to him.”

The clues about the meaning of each moment are the very themes he assigned to each planet.

Gustav Holst: The Planets
Mars, the bringer of war
Venus, the bringer of peace
Mercury, the winged messenger
Jupiter, the bringer of jollity
Saturn, the bringer of old age
Uranus, the magician
Neptune, the mystic

The programme is completed by the interpretation of “La Valse” on the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s birth. One of the author’s most emblematic works, “La Valse” was conceived as a tribute to Johann Strauss II’s Viennese waltzes and was classified by the author as a “choreographic poem.”
