Lagoa names auditorium after Fado singer Carlos do Carmo

It was in front of a full house on Saturday night (April 28) that Lagoa paid tribute to one of Portugal’s most famous Fado singers by naming its municipal auditorium “Auditório Carlos do Carmo”.

Carlos do Carmo, 78, said he felt honoured to be part of this tribute that saw politicians, musicians and fans coming together to celebrate the career of the first Portuguese singer to ever win a Grammy Award.

Not only was the local auditorium named after him, but other renowned singers such as Cristina Branco, Camané, Marcos Rodrigues and Paulo de Carvalho also took the stage alongside Carlos do Carmo to perform some of the songs that catapulted the artist to the top of Fado music.

Among those attending the ceremony was Prime Minister António Costa, who spoke about his love for Carmo’s music.

“It was thanks to Carlos do Carmo that I discovered and started to love Fado, and it was thanks to him that I discovered that Fado went beyond ‘sadness’,” the PM said.
