Lagoa unveils programme of religious and cultural events

Religious and cultural events galore in Lagoa between August 29 and September 8

The municipal council of Lagoa has unveiled a programme of religious and cultural events to celebrate its municipal holiday and pay tribute to its patron saint Our Lady of Light (Nossa Senhora da Luz) between August 29 and September 8.

Kicking off the cultural programme will be Lagoa’s ‘Mostra dos Doces Conventuais’, an event focusing on traditional conventual sweets which will take place between Thursday and Sunday (August 29-September 1) at the São José Convent. The event, which will be free to visit, will run from 7pm to midnight every day.

Cultural festivities will then move to the square near the town’s Carlos do Carmo auditorium, which will host the ‘First Meeting of Portuguese Popular Music of Lagoa’ at 9pm on Friday, September 6, followed by the ‘Celebrating Lagoa’ party at 4pm on Saturday, September 7 and a concert by Portuguese pop singer Diogo Piçarra at 10pm on Sunday, September 8.

Meanwhile, Lagoa’s religious festivities will take place at the Igreja Matriz (Nossa Senhora da Luz) church, starting with the ‘210th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Parish Church of Lagoa’, which will be celebrated with a Eucharist ceremony on Sunday, September 1 at midday.

The religious programme will continue on Tuesday, September 3 with a Marian celebration at 9pm, a performance by the Cantate Domino choir on Wednesday, September 4 at 9pm, and a penitential celebration on Thursday, September 5 at the same time. The two closing events of the religious celebrations will be an evening Mass of the ‘Nativity of Our Lady’ at 7pm on Saturday, September 7, followed by a Sunday Eucharist at midday and the Solemn Eucharist of Our Lady of Light at 6.30pm, after which there will be a procession in which the image of the patron saint being paraded through the town’s streets.

Admission to all events and festivities is free.
