Association was created to promote the Algarve’s regional sweets
The Association of Regional Sweets of the Algarve (ADRA) has been provided with several rooms at Lagos’ Espaço Jovem (Youth Space) to “develop activities to promote and showcase regional Algarvian sweets.”
In other words, the association has new spaces to pursue its efforts to showcase why the Algarve is so famous for its mouthwatering sweets.
The association was created on April 12, 2022, with the goal of “preserving, valuing and promoting regional sweets as a traditional art, product and economic activity”.
It has also been working hard on its goal to secure IGP status (Protected Geographical Indication, or PGI) for the Algarve’s Dom Rodrigo, the beloved, tinfoil-wrapped egg threads with cinnamon. A bid has already been submitted to the Agriculture and Rural Development Board (DGADR) and a decision is pending.
The rooms at the Espaço Jovem, located in the former Gil Eanes secondary school, have been provided by Lagos municipal council, which says the decision is in line with its policy to support “cultural, sports and recreational associations” and to provide new uses to buildings which are owned or operated by the local authority.
The local council hopes that the new spaces will offer the association “better conditions to fulfil its mission and work to expand its number of members and its representation in the region.”
