The municipality of Lagos is preparing to celebrate the centenary of the Avenida Municipal Market.
Lagos is initiating the 100th-anniversary celebrations of its Municipal market, an iconic social hub of the city dating back to the first quarter of the 20th century.
Although it was constructed around 1924, according to historical records, the official inauguration occurred the following year, on January 15, 1925.
The celebrations kick off on October 19 and last until January 15, 2025, when a plaque commemorating the centenary will be unveiled, and a book entitled “Mercado Municipal da Avenida (1924) – Um Mercado Centenário” will be launched.
The programme of activities offers guided tours of the market, highlighting memories tied to the Mercado da Avenida and various markets prominent in the last century, alongside those still operational in the city.
This month, the market will feature vibrant live music and engaging cooking demonstrations, showcasing the diversity of local cuisine and the flavours of the fresh produce it offers.
