Landlords’ pet policies force heartbreaking choices for families

As the Algarve faces a growing housing crisis, families with pets are finding themselves in heartbreaking situations

Increasingly, landlords are enforcing strict no-pet policies, leaving families with the devastating choice of giving up their beloved animals or facing eviction. At Cadela Carlota, we’ve witnessed this firsthand, as more dogs are surrendered due to these circumstances.

Maya: a loving dog searching for a second chance

Take Maya’s story, for example. Maya is a young, affectionate dog who once lived happily with her family. Unfortunately, her barking during the day led to complaints from neighbours. The landlord gave the family an ultimatum: resolve the issue or leave. Unable to find an alternative solution, the family made the painful decision to surrender her.

Maya

Maya is now looking for a foster or forever home where her loyal and loving nature can shine. She’s great on a leash, eager to learn, and thrives on human affection. A firm favourite amongst volunteers, Maya has the potential to become a confident and devoted companion.

Lord: a calm companion in desperate need

Another dog in need is Lord, a calm and affectionate four-year-old who has lived with his family since he was a puppy. Lord’s family is now at risk of eviction because their landlord has prohibited dogs, and they haven’t been able to find an affordable pet-friendly rental.

Lord

Lord is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and will be neutered. He’s accustomed to living indoors and would be an ideal companion for anyone willing to give him a chance. We are actively trying to find Lord a home before he has to suffer the stress and confusion of leaving a home for the shelter.

How you can help

These stories highlight the urgent need for community support. If you can share this story via social media or by word of mouth, please do. Fostering provides a loving environment and prevents overcrowding in shelters, giving these animals the stability they deserve. As always, Cadela Carlota will pay any vet bills and support with costs whilst a dog is fostered.
