Left in a lather as leader changes discourse on immigration

Prominent PS Socialists are ‘not happy’ (to say the least) over comments made to Expresso by their leader Pedro Nuno Santos. Santos gave a wide-ranging interview – stressing that he wants to be prepared for early elections – but it was his stance on immigration that has really rankled: he stressed that the previous Socialist government did not do well in opening the floodgates to immigrants through the ‘manifestation of interest’ mechanism (axed by incoming social democrats) and that immigrants, anyway, must learn to take on the cultures of their adopted country. Both opinions have seen a lot of kickback from ‘big names’ in the party. Now an MEP, Ana Catarina Mendes has gone as far as accusing Santos of cosying up to the agenda of the right, and extreme right…
