Legionella detected at Lagoa school showers

No cases of infection have been detected

The sports pavilion at Lagoa’s ESPAMOL school has been closed since last week after routine tests detected the presence of the bacteria that causes Legionnaire’s disease.

The school’s board was notified by the regional health authority after the tests were carried out between Thursday and Friday, leading to the closure of the pavillion and the cancellation of physical education classes until the area is deemed safe again, Nuno Boucinha, ESPAMOL’s deputy director, told the Resident this afternoon.

He added that no cases of legionella among students or staff have been detected.

The pavilion will remain closed until the schools receives the ‘all clear’ from the health authority.

Legionella is a type of potentially dangerous bacteria which can lead to several health issues, including Legionnaire’s disease, a form of pneumonia.
