Carvoeiro’s Alfanzina lighthouse (pictured) and Faro Island’s Santa Maria lighthouse are open to the public until August 31 from Tuesdays to Sundays between 2.30pm and 6.30pm.
The visits are only possible thanks to ‘Geração Z’, a “free-time occupation programme” created by the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ) which places young volunteers at the lighthouses to welcome visitors.
Portugal has 30 lighthouses, six of which are located in the Algarve.
