Traffic will be limited in Portimão’s Cardosas tunnel between February 10 and 19
Drivers in Portimão are being warned about traffic limitations at one of the city’s busiest access points, the Cardosas tunnel.
Between February 10 and 19, drivers can expect alternating lane closures, as crews move in to install modern and energy-efficient lighting.
“This is an essential intervention to strengthen security and energy efficiency in one of the city’s main access points, creating a more sustainable and functional city,” the municipal council says in a statement.
Works will take place during the day to “ensure light inside the tunnel,” although they may continue past “normal working hours”.
The first phase kicks off at 9am on Monday, February 10, with the lane linking Portimão to the hospital shutting down first. Once those works are wrapped up, the reverse lane will follow suit. However, between 7pm on February 14 and 8am on February 17, the tunnel will be fully open to traffic, offering a brief reprieve for weekend travellers.
The full reopening is slated for February 20, 2025, marking the completion of this €140,000 investment.
During the works, the council is urging drivers to pay special attention to temporary signage and use alternative routes whenever possible.
