Lisbon city council approves doubling of tourist tax from September 1

Lisbon city council has approved a proposal to increase the tourist tax on overnight stays from €2 per guest per night to €4 per guest per night. The change will come into force “from September 1” (the date by which most Portuguese holidaymakers have returned to work). Charges will also be doubling for arrivals by sea (going from €1 per passenger to €2) but these will only come into force once amendments to cruise ship regulations have been published in Diário da República.
