The appalling gaff of Lisbon City Council in exposing to Russian authorities the personal details of dissidents living in Portugal has, it seems, seen a court reduce the initial fine from €1.25 million to €1 million. Lawyer Tiago Félix da Costa confirmed the news today, following intervention by the council – but the fine essentially remains, and it will have to be paid. This was always an appalling lapse that put people’s lives at risk. Current mayor Carlos Moedas is considering an appeal, and has publicly lamented the ‘heavy legacy’ inherited by the former administration, under Fernando Medina, under whose watch all these data protection infringement took place.
