Lisbon’s Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) celebrates its 100th anniversary today. Although the prevalence of cancer has been increasing, IPO professionals say that, thanks to improvements in healthcare and research, there are more and more reasons for hope. Currently, the greatest challenge facing this public hospital is to continue being able to provide a quality response to all cases. Says SIC Notícias, “it is hoped that 2024 will mark the start of construction of the new outpatient building, 30 years after it was announced”. To mark the centenary, Portuguese artist Bordallo II offered a work: chicks made from rubbish and hospital waste, inspired by the animals that populate the building’s garden. The work represents hope, says Lusa. With more than 2,000 employees, including 360 doctors, 620 nurses and 260 health technicians, the Lisbon IPO currently carries out around 300,000 consultations a year.
