For the time being, Savannah Resources – the British company seeking to sink an open pit lithium mine in the UNESCO World Heritage countryside around Covas do Barroso – is saying that it has “adjusted” its timetable for the start of production, to 2027. In a statement issued this week, the company’s third CEO since this project began, Emanuel Proença, explained that the bureaucratic process has “unfortunately” taken longer than expected. “We remain committed to pursuing land purchases and leases through amicable agreements with all relevant stakeholders”, he said, in a note that also explained the company has started the legal process to allow it “temporary access to land it does not currently own” to “keep Project workstreams on track”. The reality is that local feeling is and always has been dead set against this mine. Thus there will be a lot more to come, in the weeks and months ahead.
