Local pastry chef bakes giant cake for charity

Local pastry chef Filipe Martins from Olhão bakery Kubidoce is set to impress once again.

The master baker will be presenting a giant Bolo Rei (festive fruit cake) to the Olhão public on December 14 at Praça da Restauração, in an effort to raise money for the town’s welfare centre Bem Estar Social Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

To create the massive cake, Filipe will be helped by his experienced crew as well as a number of baker friends. In total, 30-40 people will be kept busy for up to four days.

And the amount of ingredients needed is nothing less than staggering – 150kgs of flour, 150kgs of crystallised fruit, 50kgs of white chocolate, 50kgs of dark chocolate, 800 eggs, 50kgs of dried fruits, 50kgs of sugar, and the list goes on.
Once the humungous cake has been made, local scouts will be brought in to help distribute slices, in exchange for donations.

The initiative follows on from the success of others that have now made this wonderful Christmas cake “a staple event” in Olhão.
