Jorge Roque da Cunha, the secretary-general for the last 12 years of SIM – the Independent Syndicate of Doctors – is to step down at the union’s congress later this month. He has said he feels “a degree of sadness” for leaving in the wake of recent struggles with a government that failed to appreciate the doctors’ arguments, leading to repeated industrial action and negative consequences for the SNS State health service. Taking over his role in trying to win the best possible deal for doctors will be Nuno Rodrigues, a public health doctor, writes Correio da Manhã.
