On Sunday April 11 and April 25, Loulé will play host to two of the Algarve’s biggest religious processions – The Sovereign Mother Celebrations – which attracts hundreds of people from all over the region. Apparently, the celebrations are divided into two themes. On Easter Sunday, it is known as the ‘small celebration’ in which the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary is carried by eight men dressed in white, up a steep hill in direction of the São Francisco church in Loulé. “This is a tradition that was passed through generations from father to son, which unfortunately is becoming lost,” a câmara spokesperson revealed. Believers say their goodbyes to the Patron Saint on Sunday April 25, in a ceremony known as the ‘grand celebration’.
