Loulé to limit car traffic in historic centre

A system to limit traffic in the historic centre of Loulé and parts of Quarteira is being implemented

At a time when a local controversy has erupted in Tavira over a new proposed mobility plan which will bring more traffic into the town centre, Loulé is doing exactly the opposite. The municipal council has announced it is implementing a system to limit traffic in the historic centre of Loulé and parts of Quarteira.

The works to implement this new system have already been completed, the council says, adding that the areas where traffic will be limited include Rua D. Paio P. Correia, Rua das Bicas, Rua 9 de Abril, Calçada Horta del Rei, Rua Dr. Joaquim Nunes Saraiva, Travessa do Mercado, Travessa Nossa Senhora do Pilar and Praça da República (in Loulé) and Rua Portas do Mar, Rua da Mata, Rua da Praia, Travessa do Leste, Rua dos Peões, Rua Vasco da Gama and Rua Manuel Pontes da Horta (in Quarteira).

The goal is to “improve the life quality of the resident population and tourists who visit these towns,” the council says, and to make these streets, squares, and other public areas much more pleasant and safer for walking.

The council adds that this new system will be enforced once the regulations which will set the rules, days and schedules of these traffic restrictions are discussed and approved.
