Loulé Municipal Council has issued a warning regarding the detection of unsafe drinking water in the Montes Novos supply zone. This announcement follows routine water quality checks.
The water has been deemed unsafe due to “elevated levels of chlorates”, which are “by-products of the disinfectants used in water treatment.”
The council statement reads: “Initial corrective measures were unsuccessful in reducing chlorate levels to safe standards. Consequently, on May 28, 2024, the health authority declared a public health risk and mandated the following restrictions:
- Do not use the water for direct consumption, such as drinking or cooking. Alternative sources like bottled water should be used.
- The water can still be used for other purposes, including irrigation, washing surfaces and dishes, and flushing toilets.”
The council adds that these restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
