Lufthansa creates 700 jobs in Santa Maria da Feira

Lufthansa Technik to construct repair plant for aircraft engines

Lufthansa Technik, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa group, has announced the construction of a repair plant for aircraft engines and components in Santa Maria da Feira (Aveiro district) that will create more than 700 jobs.

Applications will open in 2025, according to a statement sent to the press today.

The new plant, located on a 230,000 sq m site in the Lusopark industrial park, will be equipped with the latest technologies in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) sector, and should be completed by the end of 2027.

The first jobs will be advertised online in the coming weeks and include mechanics, electronics technicians, engineers, process and human resources managers. Lufthansa Technik will also build a training centre in Santa Maria da Feira as early as next year to train future Lufthansa Technik Portugal workers, so that production can begin as soon as the new 54,000 sq m facility is completed.

“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Lufthansa Technik: for the first time in the company’s history, we are building and opening our own facilities in Portugal” said Harald Gloy, the company’s director of operations. “We are delighted to be welcomed with open arms here in Santa Maria da Feira (…) Lufthansa Technik has ambitious growth objectives and we want to continue to expand our leading position as a global market leader in the MRO sector in the future.’

Mr Gloy added: “We are convinced that we have found the ideal location in Santa Maria da Feira. Something really big will be created here – for the region, for Lufthansa Technik and for our employees and customers. This investment is also a sign of the Lufthansa Group’s commitment to Portugal” – this potentially being a reference to the fact that Lufthansa is one of the companies in the frame for purchasing TAP.

Minister for the Economy Pedro Reis has welcomed what he calls a”significant investment by Lufthansa Technik in Portugal, which will create more than 700 jobs (…) It is another step towards the reindustrialisation of our country and represents confidence in our infrastructure and our workforce – especially our highly qualified aviation engineers. It also shows that we are on the right track to attract foreign investment that will help boost the Portuguese economy”.

Ricardo Arroja, president and CEO of AICEP (Portugal’s Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade), has added that he believes  “the capacity and expertise that Lufthansa Technik is bringing to Portugal with its new facilities will increase our country’s competitiveness in the aerospace sector in Europe and help strengthen this group”.

A ‘super positive’ win-win deal, in other words – and one that comes as elsewhere in the country two large employers in the automotive sector have announced hundreds of job losses. ND
