Workers at Somincor, the company running Lundin Mining’s Neves-Corvo mine in the district of Castro Verde (Beja), will hold a general strike on March 26 and 27 to demand wage increases, among other demands. The general strike at the mine’s four daily shifts was approved “by an overwhelming majority” of the workers who took part in plenary sessions held earlier this month, Albino Pereira, leader of the Mining Industry Workers’ Union (STIM) told Lusa today. “The reason for this strike is that the company is not responding to demands approved by the workers” and presented to Somincor’s management last December, he said. According to Pereira, workers are demanding “career progression and fair pay rises of €150” each.
