Lusitanos in the spotlight in Albufeira

The first edition of the “Algarve Equestrian Gala” takes place at Albufeira’s Marina between July 27 and September 21.

Albufeira is organising its first edition of the “Gala Equestre Algarve” at the Albufeira Marina between July 27 and September 21. The two-month event features five shows designed to honour the Lusitano horse and highlight “the elegance of the relationship” between humans and the iconic Portuguese breed.

The first of the five equestrian moments takes place tomorrow, Thursday, July 27, at 21:30 and is free of admission. The following performances are scheduled for August 10 and 24 and September 7 and 21.

Experts in equestrian art say that the Lusitano horse is the oldest saddle horse in the world. Authentically Portuguese, it established a relationship with humans approximately five thousand years ago and shares ancestors with the Sorraia and Arabian breeds.

José Carlos Rolo, president of the municipality, underlines that “this is an initiative that promotes equestrian culture, promoting Albufeira as a tourist destination offering diversified activities for all audiences at a time of the year in which the municipality hosts tourists from all over the world”.

Each of the five shows features a presentation of classical riding exercises and choreographies performed by Algarve haute école riders and horses, accompanied by music as if it were a ballet. The riders wear and use Portuguese costumes and saddles. The participating artists, musicians and dancers are also from the Algarve region.

Admission to the five sessions of the “Gala Equestre Algarve – Albufeira 2023” is free.
