French president accompanied on trip with his wife, Brigitte
French President Emmanuel Macron was received with military honours today by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in Lisbon’s Praça do Império, ‘having arrived more than 30 minutes late’, remarks Lusa.
“In the first official act of his two-day state visit to Portugal, the French President and his wife, Brigitte Macron, arrived at 12.05 p.m. at Lisbon’s Praça do Império, 35 minutes late compared to the originally scheduled time of 11.30am.
“Received with military honours by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the two heads of state listened to the national anthems of both countries side by side in heavy rain, before passing through the Guard of Honour.
Macron then walked to the Jerónimos Monastery, accompanied by his wife, where he laid a wreath at the tomb of the poet Luís Vaz de Camões.
The two heads of state will now meet at the Palace of Belém, after taking the traditional official photograph in the Sala das Bicas and Emmanuel Macron signing the book of honour of the Presidency of the Republic, signed by all heads of state who visit Portugal.
The French President begins a two-day state visit to Portugal today, with stops in Lisbon and Porto, during which he will sign a series of bilateral political, economic and cultural agreements, and meet with prime minister Luís Montenegro, to discuss the burning topics of the time, European security and defence.
