Madeira faces ‘accelerating climate changes’

A researcher from the University of Madeira has issued a warning about the consequences of climate change in the region. Hélder Spínola predicts that the temperature in the archipelago will rise between 3ºC and 5ºC in the coming years, which will significantly increase the risk of flooding. For the researcher, there is an urgent need to implement public policies, including a plan to remove people from the areas most at risk. Climate scenarios for Madeira indicate that changes are occurring faster than expected, with the climate becoming increasingly extreme. This recent summer saw wildfires in Madeira destroy huge swathes of countryside, burning for days uncontrollably.
