Madeira’s PSD governor Miguel Albuquerque has said today that he will respond in writing to the parliamentary hearing requested by opposition party JPP on the fire that raged for 13 days on the island last month. He stressed that he is “not shying away from confrontation, merely complying with the “provisions of the law and regulations”. How this decision will go down with opposition parties far from happy with the way in which fire-combat was led remains to be seen. Mr Albuquerque has assured journalists that his government will ensure that everything in terms of how the fire was tackled is clarified.
