It’s almost time for the 2024 edition of the Mamamaratona, the Algarve’s famous race against cancer which will take place on October 20 and every year raises much-needed funds for the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA).
After being held for many years in Portimão, the Mamamaratona has moved to Quarteira, beginning at 10am at Passeio das Dunas.
Just like last year, the event will feature a walk/run component which will be divided into two routes (5km and 7km) which can be completed by walking or running. There will also be the official mini marathon (10km) and half marathon (21km). The event will kick off at 10am.
There are three main goals that the AOA aims to achieve by hosting the event: raising awareness about cancer, particularly breast cancer (as part of the international movement ‘Pink October’); encouraging a healthy lifestyle and promoting physical activity; and raising funds for AOA’s mission to prevent cancer and support cancer patients and their family members.
This year’s programme includes many activities, including several screenings, fitness exercises, live entertainment and “many surprises.”
Registrations for the event opened on Monday, September 16 for a fee of €8 (until September 30) and €10 (until October 18) – which includes a kit comprising a backpack, hat, cotton t-shirt and other items.
Participants who want to sign up in person can do so in Faro (AOA headquarters and Forum Algarve information desk); Loulé (Quarteira parish council from October 1 onwards and Artbody gym); and Portimão (BLiP fair on October 13), although an easier online option is available at www.mamamaratona.com.
Organisers note that the Algarve Athletics Association is in charge of registrations for the mini and half marathon (www.aaalgarve.org).
All participants will be signed up for a competition to win several prizes, with winners due to be announced in the days after the event on AOA’s social media pages.
