Man has been remanded in custody
PJ police have announced the arrest of a 51-year-old man suspected of deliberately setting fire to a house and a car in Portimão on Wednesday afternoon (November 20).
According to a statement released by the criminal police force, the suspect acted “out of revenge” due to a legal process which is underway to evict him from the two-storey house.
The man is believed to have set fire to the house, which was completely destroyed and caused injuries to one of the firefighters called to battle the blaze. Around one hour later, the suspect is believed to have also set fire to a car parked near one of Portimão’s beaches, leaving it partially destroyed.
A swift investigation launched by authorities immediately after the incidents led to the collection of evidence and the suspect’s arrest on the same day, PJ police adds.
The man has already been heard in court and was remanded in custody.
