Man dies on Quarteira beach

A 77-year-old man died after being found face down in the sea at Quarteira beach on Wednesday (August 3).

Authorities were alerted at 4.30pm, reports the national maritime authority (AMN).

The victim, who apparently suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, was brought to land by a beachgoer, after which the beach’s lifeguards and later INEM emergency services tried to revive the man, but to no avail.

His death was pronounced on the spot by an INEM doctor and the body was taken to Faro’s legal medicine institute by members of Portugal’s Red Cross as instructed by the Public Ministry.

AMN added that a maritime police psychologist was providing support to the victim’s family.

The man’s nationality was not revealed.
