In an extraordinary blunder, a Barcelos hospital discharged an accident victim with a broken back and bleeding to the brain.
The 55-year-old had only just got home – unable to walk – when a call came through from the hospital to say he had to come back.
“They got the name wrong of the person to be discharged,” the man’s son explained to CM.
Asking not to be named, the son said his 55-year-old father has not yet decided whether or not to make a formal complaint against Hospital Santa Maria Maior.
For now he remains interned, awaiting a TAC scan.
The mix-up came, says the hospital, because the man had been ‘discharged’ from orthopaedics but should have waited for a surgical evaluation.
The man suffered two broken vertebrae and a cerebral haemorrhage in a motorbike accident.
