GERRY AND KATE McCann are said to be shocked and upset after receiving a telephone call from a journalist saying a body had been found at Lagos Marina on Wednesday morning (July 11).
The call was made early on Thursday morning, before the twins were awake, and the reporter wanted to know if they had any details about a body found at the marina hours earlier.
The Resident has been able to establish with the maritime police that the body was that of a British man, who preparing for a seven-week adventure with his 14 year old son in his yacht, the Blue Mantle.
He had arrived at Lagos Marina on Tuesday (July 10), from Tenerife and his son arrived in Lagos the same day from Manchester.
The alarm was raised by the boy after he found his father dead. It is thought he had died during the night.
Medical records show that the man suffered from diabetes and a heart problem.
The body is still under Ministério Público control, and an autopsy will be carried out to confirm the cause of death.
The British Consulate in Portimão was called immediately by the maritime police to help with the case and with communications.
An older son of the man, who also lives in Manchester, was also immediately called by the consulate and arrived around 6pm on Wednesday at Lagos Marina.
The 32-year old is now caring for his younger brother.
