The core mission is to raise donations for a local animal charity
Mar Shopping Algarve will host the second edition of the Algarve Coolest Dog competition on Sunday (October 6). Starting at 3pm at Woofland by Iron Dog, this event is part of the global celebrations for World Animal Day and promises a fun-filled afternoon for both dogs and their owners.
Following the “huge success” of last year’s inaugural event, organisers aim to double the number of participants for this year’s edition. A section of Mar Shopping Algarve’s car park will be closed off to accommodate the festivities, which will see dozens of dogs competing across a wide range of categories.
The competition includes awards for everything from the funniest dog, the coolest puppy, the best recall, and the best “sit” and “down” commands, to the best leash walking, the best rescue dog, the best veteran, and even titles like the happiest dog, the best biscuit catcher and the most laid-back. The winners of these categories will move on to the grand ‘Best in Show’ finale.
This year, the event will feature distinguished international judge Juan Carlos Sanchez, representing both the Portuguese Kennel Club and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, who will be joined by trainers from dog training school Iron Dog Algarve.
While the competition is meant to be fun for dogs and their owners, its core mission is to raise donations for a local animal charity, which will be chosen by the participants. Although entry is free, participants are encouraged to bring essential items as donations, such as pet food, blankets, leashes, collars, bowls, or any other animal-related goods.
All participating dogs – aged four months and up, with up-to-date vaccinations – will receive a certificate of participation and souvenirs.
