Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has received Prince Rahim Aga Khan in Lisbon, marking the first official meeting of the leader of the world’s Ismaili Muslims after he was enthroned last week. According to a note from the Ismaili Imamat in Portugal, released after the meeting yesterday, the 50th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims expressed his commitment “to continuing to strengthen this partnership” with Portugal, especially “the deep and lasting relationship between the Ismaili Imamat, the Aga Khan Development Network and the Portuguese Republic.”. He also thanked de Sousa for his support for the Ismaili Imamat and for his presence at last week’s ceremony honouring the late Prince Karim Aga Khan. Rahim Aga Khan V was appointed spiritual leader of the Ismailis last Wednesday, hours after the death of his father.
