Marcelo to receive Madeiran representative as political crisis enters 4th week

With the political crisis in Madeira now entering its fourth week – and the arrested men in the corruption probe only today likely to hear bail measures – President Marcelo has announced he will be meeting with his representative on the archipelago, Ireneu Barreto, on Friday at midday. Hopes are that the pair will decide on the path forwards, politically, as PSD social democrats want to be allowed to continue in government, with a new leader and new executive, and opposition parties are insisting on early elections. Ireneu Barreto has intimated that he will be announcing a decision, “this weekend or early next week”.
