New data shows that marriages in Portugal are lasting longer than they used to “for the worst of all possible reasons”. The crisis, unemployment, lack of purchasing power and high taxes have all combined into a kind of marriage glue keeping people together, reveals university lecturer José Augusto Silva Lopes. “Many couples delay getting divorced in order to cope with financial difficulties,” he told Público newspaper.
