Martin Northey and The Iberian Sea School

Martin Northey is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) yachtmaster instructor and examiner for sail and power boats.  He has been sailing since the age of five and was the first person to start an RYA sailing school in Portugal 15 years ago. He uses his vast experience to guide clients through examinations allowing them to skipper boats in Portuguese waters.

Martin offers motor and sail cruising, powerboat and International Certificate of Competence (ICC) courses throughout the Algarve, both on clients’ boats and from Lagos Marina.  He uses a Cranchi Endurance 41 motor cruiser, a Beneteau Oceanis 43 yacht and a Quicksilver Commander 6.35 powerboat, which are all supplied by Seafaris of Lagos Marina.

Martin also offers RYA theory courses which are run in his classroom at Olhos de Água near Albufeira.

It is now necessary for anyone skippering a boat in Portugal to have a licence and the ICC is the qualification that British people are required to have to legally skipper a boat in Portuguese waters. The Iberian Sea School is an ICC test centre and courses vary from three to five days, however, clients with existing experience can be just tested which takes up to four hours.
