GERRY AND Kate McCann have filed an order to the High Court in the UK in an attempt to release the police files related to their daughter Madeleine’s disappearance.
The couple wish to lift the secrecy placed upon the case by Portuguese authorities. Information released would be used to help them follow their own investigations in conjunction with the private detective agency they have hired.
The case put forward to the Family Division of the High Court is due to be heard by Mrs Justice Hogg on July 7, according to news reports this week in the British media.
The latest legal action taken by the McCanns is in no relation to speculation in the Portuguese press last week referring to secrecy being lifted by Portuguese police in the Madeleine case.
Meanwhile, Irish MEP Eoin Ryan has spoken out in defence of the McCanns following their visit to Strasbourg last Tuesday, June 17.
He told The Resident: “I met with Gerry and Kate McCann to promote the implementation of this important initiative (the written declaration on emergency cooperation in recovering missing children). We are all aware of the very tragic disappearance of Madeleine McCann while on holiday in Portugal last year.”
In reference to previous allegations of the McCanns involvement in the disappearance of their daughter, Eoin Ryan told an Irish newspaper the Evening Herald: “I don’t think anyone believes that” and that those allegations have all been “pooh-poohed” now.
Eoin Ryan told The Resident: “I have signed the declaration, which I believe is very important.”
As of June 19, a total of 308 MEPs had signed the written declaration.
