‘Medieval Days’ take Castro Marim back in time to Middle Ages

The spirit of medieval times is being recreated in Castro Marim as the town hosts another edition of its ‘Medieval Days’ event, which will begin on Wednesday, August 28 and run until Sunday, September 1.

“For five entertaining days and nights, Castro Marim will return to the Middle Ages, perhaps the most intriguing of the history of humanity. The castle and village will transform into the ideal setting to welcome kings and queens, knights in shining armour, jesters, merchants, monks, ladies and noblemen, but also the contradictions of an era that was both barbaric and cultured,” organisers say.

The event features horseback tournaments, a variety of street entertainment, live music and dance performances, an exhibition of torture instruments, a medieval market and, perhaps one of the standouts, the medieval banquet.

The banquet allows visitors to become a “king for one night” and taste some of the most delicious delicacies of the medieval times during a torch-lit dinner.

Most of the entertainment happens inside the castle and at the São Sebastião fort. Ticket prices range from €3 to €40 depending on which parts of the fair you want to access (the street fair, the castle, or both), if you want a single-day ticket or a five-day pass, and whether you want to take part in the medieval banquet.

Tickets can be purchased online at bol.pt or at several spots in and around Castro Marim, such as the Gabinete de Apoio ao Munícipe (GAM), the Castro Marim tourism office, the leisure area at Altura’s 24 de Junho Avenue, the Tavira Gran Plaza shopping centre or at the ticket booths that will be set up in the town during the event.

Castro Marim residents can enter for free, needing only to pick up their bracelet from the GAM, the parish council or the Castro Marim ‘Consigo’ service.
