With some papers trumpeting the size of aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and naval destroyer USS Forrest Sherman – between them carrying 5000 military on a four-day break following NATO manoeuvres in Norway – others have highlighted the arrest of two soldiers for attacking a Lisbon taxi driver in the early hours of this (Monday) morning..
The men, aged 21 and 23, allegedly beat the man, stealing his cellphone.
Say reports, the taxi driver was treated in hospital for his injuries. But he was clearly able to give a satisfactory description of his attackers, who were being taken for questioning to the capital’s criminal court this afternoon.
The two young men were accompanied by a representative of the US embassy, a representative of the Portuguese Navy and a lawyer.
The American ships – described by Diário de Notícias as a “town with 5000 Americans” – arrived outside Lisbon over the weekend, after taking part in Trident Juncture 2018 – the largest NATO exercises since the 1980s that took place in the seas around Norway (click hereclick here).
