Missing Funchal student found caught up in boat propeller

Five days after having been seen alive for the last time, the body of a 21-year-old Madeiran student has been found caught up in a “moliceiro” boat propeller in Aveiro’s central canal.
PJ police are understood to be treating Jorge Fernandes’ death as an accident, though news reports say he was found with lesions to his face. Whether these were sustained as he fell into the canal or whether he had been involved in a fight beforehand has not been made clear.
The young man from Funchal, studying at Aveiro University, had been spending a few days with friends when he disappeared after a night out.
He is understood to have been last seen in Aveiro’s Praça do Peixe at 2.30am on November 27. He then apparently decided to leave his friends and walk back to the home of another friend.
He never reached his destination, and police, maritime police and firemen were all involved in search efforts which came to a halt on Wednesday afternoon (December 3) when the young man’s body was found caught up in a canal boat propeller.
