“Mists and Breezes: Between the Beautiful and the Sublime” opens in Portimão on April 12

The new photography exhibition by Pedro Poucochinho can be visited at the Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes until May 31.

A new photography exhibition is opening at Portimão’s Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes on April 12. Titled “Brumas e Brisas: Entre o Belo e o Sublime” (Mists and Breezes: Between the Beautiful and the Sublime), it showcases a collection of photographs taken by Pedro Poucochinho, who is not a photographer. Rather, he is “a visual storyteller, a traveller of the senses, and a keen observer of the landscapes that surround him”.

He is also a proud resident of Portimão who chose this venue intentionally, as his exhibition pays tribute to the house’s patron, Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a former president of the Republic, a renowned writer and a lover of landscapes.

The amateur photographer explains in this exhibition, “There are images that call us for what they reveal. Others, because of what they hide. In this exhibition, light does not impose itself. It fades, dissolves, becomes diffuse. The first photographs present us with an instant of balance: colour and the absence of it, the visible and the forgotten”.

He adds, “As we move forward, sharpness gives way to mystery, and the gaze is invited to go through layers of mist and fog, where the form is diluted, and reality becomes almost tactile in its absence”.

Quoting Kant, who stated “that the Beautiful comforts us, while the Sublime challenges us”, Poucochinho points to the fragile border between the breezes that insinuate themselves and the shadows that hesitate.

Pedro Poucochinho graduated in Management and Marketing, built his professional career in political and municipal communication, and is currently working at the Municipality of Portimão.

In September 2020, during a moment of personal transformation inspired by meeting the artist Ji Lee, he began a new phase of his creative life. He was challenged to explore his passions and create the “Cadernos de Andarilho”, a personal project that combines three of his hobbies: walking, writing and mobile photography.

Since then, at dawn every Sunday, he walks the trails of the Algarve with his iPhone, capturing and editing images that serve as both visual records and reflections on the ephemeral.

In August 2023, he presented “Despertares de Andarilho”, his first exhibition, in the Municipal Water and Waste Company of Portimão (EMARP) building. The following year, in December 2024, he held his second exhibition at Galeria C&S – Armazém das Artes, which he called “In Praise of the Winter Solstice”, to celebrate this season of the year.

The “Brumas e Brisas: Entre o Belo e o Sublime” exhibition can be visited until May 31, from Tuesday to Friday, from 10h00 to 12h30 and 14h00 to 17h00, and on Saturday, from 14h00 to 17h00.
