‘Mixed’ classes saga continues

A Loulé parents group has organised another hunger strike and demonstration as part of its fight for the reorganisation of their children’s classes at the ‘nº4’ primary school in Loulé.

The parents are demanding that their children – third-grade pupils who have been placed in a fourth-grade class – be placed in the appropriate grade, especially since they say that there are third-grade classes with only 11 students.

Despite the fact that the Directorate-General of School Establishments (DGEST) authorised the Loulé school board to reorganise its school classes, the headmaster has yet to carry out these changes, claim the parents.

As a result, the parents group visited the headmaster’s office on September 30 in order to confront him about the subject. The group of discontented parents revealed they were forced to leave the office because the GNR police was called, as the headmaster claimed it was outside his working hours and he had to have his dinner.

The parents association revealed it does not understand why the headmaster does not simply put into practice the orders that were decreed by his superiors.

To contest the headmaster’s actions, father João Martins, who had already endured 48 hours without food a couple of weeks ago, will resume his hunger strike on October 4. A demonstration at the school entrance is also scheduled for the same day at 8.30am.
