At a point where his popularity – and that of his party – should be ‘through the roof’ (bearing in mind the multiplicity of ‘government scandals’) – PSD leader Luís Montenegro is failing to shine in opinion polls. Further headaches have come with the fact that former ally, Pinto Moreira (now dropped as a PSD MP because of his involvement in an investigation into corruption) has returned to parliamentary duties nonetheless, sitting on various parliamentary committees as an independent. Pinto Moreira’s mere presence in parliament “prejudices Montenegro’s leadership”, say observers.
